About Yakata-bune

The origins of yakata-bunedate back to the Heian period. Originally, they were a pastime for the privileged classes, such as aristocrats. As water transportation developed ---particularly on rivers --- these boats became increasingly luxurious and elegant. During the Edo period,yakata-bunewere used by feudal lords and wealthy merchants for recreation, including cherry blossom viewing, moon viewing, andwere considered evenmore prestigious than traditional Japanese restaurants.
Eventually, yakata-bune became accessible to the common people of Edo, evolving into a form of popular entertainment that brought joy to everyday life. Today, they remain a cherished part of Japanese culture, woven into the modern Reiwa era as a living tradition.
