About Yakata-bune

The origins of the "yakatabune" date back to the Heian period. It was born as a pastime for the privileged classes such as aristocrats. In the Edo period, water transportation developed significantly as a means of moving around on rivers and moats. The hulls of yakatabune boats became more luxurious and gorgeous, and they were used by feudal lords and wealthy merchants for recreational purposes such as cherry blossom viewing, moon viewing, fireworks, and summer cool weather, and were loved as being "more prestigious than a traditional Japanese restaurant." After that, yakatabune boats quickly spread to the common people of Edo, and before long they were elevated to "amusement" = "entertainment" that enlivened the people of Edo. They have been woven into the present Reiwa era as a part of Edo culture that remains in the present day.
